Car Key Replacement — What It Costs and How Long It Takes

Transponder keys, key fobs, push-to-start, laser-cut keys — a licensed automotive locksmith explains the real costs and timelines.

Published November 1, 2024 · By Run Local Lock and Key

Lost your car key? Broken your fob? The dealer isn't your only option — and it's almost never the cheapest one. A licensed automotive locksmith can cut and program most car keys on-site in under an hour, often at half the dealer's price. Here's everything you need to know before you call.

Transponder Keys (Most 1995–2015 Vehicles)

A transponder key has a microchip embedded in the plastic head that communicates with your car's immobilizer. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't start — even if the key is cut correctly. Programming a transponder key requires specialized equipment. We carry programming tools for most domestic and import vehicles. Cost: $75–$150 cut and programmed on-site.

Remote Head Keys and Key Fobs

Remote head keys combine a transponder key with a built-in remote (lock/unlock buttons). Key fobs are separate remotes that work alongside a traditional key. Both require programming to your vehicle's receiver. If your fob isn't responding, try a new battery first (CR2032, under $5). If that doesn't fix it, the fob may need reprogramming or replacement. Cost: $100–$200 programmed on-site.

Smart Keys and Push-to-Start Fobs

Smart keys (also called proximity keys or push-to-start fobs) use radio frequency to communicate with your car continuously — you just need the fob in your pocket or bag. They're the most expensive key type to replace because they require both a new fob and programming to the vehicle's immobilizer. Cost: $150–$400 depending on the vehicle. We carry blank fobs for most makes and models.

Laser-Cut (Sidewinder) Keys

Laser-cut keys have a distinctive winding cut down the center of the blade rather than the traditional serrated edge. They're used on most European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW) and some domestic models. They require a specialized laser cutter to duplicate — not available at hardware stores. Cost: $100–$250 cut and programmed on-site.

Locksmith vs Dealer — Which Is Cheaper?

Dealers typically charge 2–3x more than a locksmith for the same key. A dealer also requires you to tow the vehicle to their service department and wait days for an appointment. A mobile locksmith comes to you — home, work, or parking lot — and completes the job in under an hour. The main exception is some newer luxury vehicles with proprietary programming that requires dealer tools; we'll tell you upfront if that's the case for your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does car key replacement take?

Most car keys can be cut and programmed on-site in 30–60 minutes. Push-to-start smart keys may take slightly longer depending on the vehicle. We carry programming equipment for most domestic and import vehicles so there's no waiting for parts.

Can a locksmith replace a key without the original?

Yes — a licensed automotive locksmith can cut a new key from the lock itself (called "key by code") and program a new transponder chip, even if you have no working key. This is a standard service. Have your vehicle identification number (VIN) and photo ID ready.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the dealer for car key replacement?

Almost always, yes. Dealers typically charge 2–3x more than a locksmith for the same key. A locksmith also comes to you — no towing required. The main exception is some newer luxury vehicles with proprietary programming that requires dealer tools; we'll tell you upfront if that's the case.

What information do I need to have a car key replaced?

You'll need your vehicle's year, make, and model, the VIN (found on the dashboard or door jamb), and a photo ID proving you own or have authorization for the vehicle. For some vehicles, the title or registration may also be requested.

Can you replace a key fob battery instead of the whole fob?

Yes — if your fob is just not responding, a dead battery is the most common cause. CR2032 batteries cost under $5 and take 30 seconds to replace. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob may need reprogramming or replacement. Call us and we'll diagnose it over the phone.
